Iran assumes presidency of UN Disarmament Conference

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 28, IRNA -- The Islamic Republic of Iran has undertaken presidency of the UN Conference on Disarmament, the world's sole multilateral disarmament forum.

The first consultative meeting of the disarmament conference with member states and representatives of the sextet began at the UN European headquarters on Monday, May 27.

The 65-nation Conference on Disarmament, created in 1978, negotiated biological and chemical weapons conventions but has been unable to carry out substantive work since 1998 because members could not agree on priorities.

Iran's ambassador and permanent envoy Mohsen Naziri briefed representatives of the member states on Iran's programs during its presidency over the conference.

Naziri said, 'Iran will do its best to solve problem with plan of action of the conference, go ahead with consultations with all members of the international institution fully clearly and within framework of the geographic groups of states.'

The participants and representatives of the geographic groups of states congratulated Iran on presidency of the Conference on Disarmament.

They appreciated the Iranian action plan and transparency.
